Austin event combines tech, health care, venture capital

The Dell Medical School has announced an upcoming conference it has organized that will not only focus on health care, but also technology, and venture capital as well. It’s scheduled to be in downtown Austin next month and is expected to draw more than 300 people. The conference will feature medical school faculty member Mark McClellan, former commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.


New People’s Community Clinic Opens in North Austin

People’s Community Clinic has opened its new facility near 290 and I-35 to help Austin’s underserved community. Medical care and educational programs will be its main focus, and People’s previous location will now be committed to women’s health and pre-natal care.


Study: Where they live affects life expectancy for poor

A new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that where the poor live has a significant impact on their life expectancies, but it doesn’t have the same effect on the affluent. Travis County ranked near the national average in expected longevity for the poor, but it also is seeing a decline in their life expectancy, unlike most other parts of the country.

Notice: The Travis County Healthcare District d/b/a Central Health adopted a tax rate that will raise more taxes for maintenance and operations than last year’s tax rate. The tax rate will effectively be raised by 6.0 percent and will raise taxes for maintenance and operations on a $100,000 home by approximately $6.18 (six dollars and eighteen cents).
