Central Health Named Healthiest Employer

February 24, 2012

Central Health was named the Healthiest Employer in Central Texas among small businesses by the Austin Business Journal at an awards ceremony on Friday, Feb. 24.

The Austin Business Journal annually honors the “most outstanding health and wellness programs created and implemented by local companies”. Awards were given in three categories; small, medium and large businesses. Central Health was awarded first among small businesses in recognition of a number of programs and efforts to improve the health and wellness of its employees. For example, the inclusion of facilities in the recent renovation of its headquarters, such as a shower, lockers and bike racks, encourage bicycle commuting and walking or jogging during lunch breaks. An organization-wide tobacco cessation policy, health and wellness benefits and regular activities and events that encourage a healthy lifestyle also contributed to this honor.

“It’s especially important for us, as a healthcare leader in Central Texas, to lead by example. If we are going to achieve our vision of seeing Central Texas become a model healthy community, then we need to walk the walk. I’m honored we were selected among all of the amazing finalists for this award, and I’m sure we will all be able to learn from one another’s efforts and improve what we do as employers to improve the health and wellness of our employees. Good health is good business,” Central Health Board Chairperson Rosie Mendoza said.

Central Health also served as a presenter of the awards program, along with sponsors Humana and RunTex, food sponsor Jason’s Deli and support from the Mayor’s Fitness Council.
