(Austin, TX.) — The former Director of Austin Public Health – Shannon Jones – has been appointed to the Central Health Board of Managers, replacing long-time Board Member Clarke Heidrick.
Heidrick was the first Chair of the initial Central Health Board of Managers and has served since Central Health was created in 2004. To fill his vacated position, which ends Dec. 31, 2017, the Travis County Commissioners Court voted to appoint Shannon Jones.
About Shannon Jones
Jones recently retired as Director of Austin Public Health this March, a position he’d held since 2015. He’d previously served as Deputy Director since 2011. In addition, Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius appointed Jones to a four-year term as Chair of the National Advisory Council for the Elimination of Tuberculosis (ACET) with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He also served as a Member of the CDC’s National Study of Determinants of Early Diagnosis, Prevention and Treatment of Tuberculosis (TB) in the African American Community.
Jones holds a Bachelor of Arts from Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Pittsburgh. He is also a Woodrow Wilson Administrative Fellow and an Associate in the American College of Healthcare Executives. Jones is also known as founder and host of the local radio talk show “Health Talk” on KAZI FM 88.7, which focuses on mental health.
New Central Health Board of Managers Officers Named for 2018
Following the recommendation of the Central Health Nominations Subcommittee, the Board of Managers voted to name as officers for 2018: Chairperson Dr. Guadalupe Zamora, Vice-Chairperson Sherri Greenberg, Treasurer Dr. Charles Bell, and Secretary Dr. Abigail Aiken.
Dr. Zamora served as vice-chairperson in 2017, originally appointed in 2013. Ms. Greenberg served as secretary in 2017 and has been a member of the Board since 2015. Dr. Bell is continuing in his role as treasurer, having served on the board since 2016. As one of the newest members of the board, joining in 2017, this is Dr. Aiken’s first time serving as an officer.
The Central Health Board of Managers is an all-volunteer board composed of four appointees from the Austin City Council, four appointees from the Travis County Commissioners Court, and one joint appointee.
