Mental health conditions are common, manageable, and treatable. In a recent discussion with Behavioral Health Manager Catherina Conte, LCSW-S, we explored the prevalence of mental health issues and emphasized the importance of maintaining good mental health for overall well-being.
About half of all Americans will experience a diagnosable mental health condition at some point in their lives, with symptoms often starting as early as age 14. Despite their prevalence, many people still face significant barriers due to stigma, which can prevent them from seeking the help they need.
“Being able to maintain good mental health is essential to our overall health and well-being,” says Catherina.
Recognizing mental health issues early is crucial. Signs to look for include difficulty performing tasks that used to be easy, a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed, and changes in sleep patterns, such as difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much.
“If you notice these types of changes in your life and want to find out more, you can talk to your primary care provider about how to get connected to our Behavioral Health Services for more support,” Catherina advises.
Self-care strategies can play a significant role in maintaining and improving mental health.
“Different self-care strategies might include things like getting outside and taking a walk with your family, enrolling in a local community yoga class, or even setting boundaries with the individuals in our life,” Catherina suggests. These actions help ensure that you are taking care of your mental and physical health.
Sharing your experiences with friends and family can also help normalize mental health care. By acknowledging that we all face challenges, we can create a supportive environment where seeking help is encouraged and accepted. This helps break down the stigma associated with mental health issues, making it easier for everyone to prioritize their mental well-being.
“By sharing our experiences with others—our friends, our family—these are steps that we can take to help normalize that caring for our minds and our hearts is an essential part of living a healthy and fulfilled life,” Catherina explains.
Mental health is an essential part of living a healthy and fulfilling life. If you’re experiencing changes in your mood, behavior, or overall mental health, don’t hesitate to reach out for help. By taking proactive steps, you can manage and treat mental health conditions effectively, leading to a better quality of life.
